Hi Chaps, recently ruined my front number plate and decided it would be nice to have it on the front wing, the vinyl type. I have seen on a couple of the older cars.I was informed that unless you car was built before 1973 this is verboten! I have a 1978 4/4, is this information correct?

Regards Max

I don't think they're legal on any car. I know Morgan have put them on the +4SS...
The plate has to be flat. Try a Google search on Construction & Use regulations...

Tentatively yes it is illegal.

You can't buy 'approved' reflective stick ons any more. The sharp will note the recent +4 Supersports model was supplied with one, but strictly - it will fail the first MOT on that basis.

Given the mark 1 eyeball will have no problem and I rather doubt ANPR will either, you'd probably get away with it.

My 1972 4/4 wears a paint and stick on number on the wing - and has since 1989 when the rules as they are now didn't exist.

This is an extract from the DVLA site which probably answers your question

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that meet the British Standard requirements.

The full details for displaying number plates can be found here:-

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_181503

Hope it helps

We are not allowed to have the registration number on the wings in Sweden.

It it correct that you can't display this type of number plate on a post '73 car but to be honest on a classic Morgan the chances of getting pulled over are very slim! It will help if you know your MOT examiner well mind.

Post 1973 have to have reflective plates. That is the only difference. Strictly speaking number plates have to be vertical. My 1995 Mog has a 7'' x 7''
Reflective stick on with bike numbers on the offside wing. I specifically queried it with my MOT tester and he had no problem with it whatsoever as it can be clearly seen. Speaking of MOT's how do Aeros with side exits pass as an exhaust exiting Kerb side is a no no ???
