Triumph Roadster

Those who read my original introductory post, will remember that I have a passing flirtatious penchant for 3 windscreen wipers. This started with one of my early cars, a 1948 1800cc Triumph Roadster. This year is the 50th anniversary of the TRClub and so a picnic was packed and off we went to Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire to view over 70 Triumph Roadsters from UK and Europe.

The Roadsters came with two power plants - the 1800 Jag/ Flying Standard 10/12 block with 4 spd g/box and the 2000cc Vauxhall/TR2/TR3 block with 3spd g/box. The right hand column change for both boxes skinned many a knuckle on the wooden dashboard. There are photos of each engine in concours cars - the 1800 has the aluminium rocker box and is 'prettier' (imho).

It was a very hot sunny day, our p&j was allowed to park with the other non-Triumph Classic Cars as was the Lea Francis pictured.

The Roadster was built on a tubular chassis with crossmembers, ash frame, aluminium body, steel front wings, flat windscreen, 3 w/screen wipers and from some angles has a vague resemblance to the Aero family innocent - and also seated 5 in relative comfort!!!

I toured mine to Switzerland and Spain but sold it in 1979 for £1000. Current mkt value ranges £20k to £34k for a pristine model sold last year.

It was a trip down memory lane oldgit and a great day out sunny drive

Lovely cars and pictures, must have been a nice trip along memory lane for you. Your car looks great against that nice backdrop proving again that classic design is indeed timeless. Thank you for posting and for the interesting background.

Cheers,

John

A 1949 Triumph Roadster 2000 recently came up for auction at Brooklands. It was one of the cars that caught my attention at the preview, primarily down to the clever rear seat/second windscreen design.

As John said, it is nice to see how well the Aero fits into the surroundings give the age difference.

I remember one of these, as owned by a near neighbour.

As a kid about 9 or 10 I appreciated its looks and enormous wings and thought that it was different! never had a ride, because his wife was a teacher at my school, and that was just in those days to underawsome to contemplate. Totally beautiful cars of the era....

But still not as good looking as the car it replaced, as in the pre-war doly roadster
