But you know you will appreciate it. Just like a Morgan !
A fool considers the price of an item, a wise man considers the value it brings.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I switched to Mac years ago. It always works, no bother with all the viruses. See enough viruses at my work!
After an IMac, Mac Book, latest addition MacBook Pro Retina with flash disk. Works immediately. Couple of IPhones in the family and an IPad. No, I have no connections with Apple! Just a happy customer (but they aren't cheap, that's for sure!).

I'm a confirmed Mac user, although I have to use Windows at work. Mac hardware is indeed more expensive than equivalent PC kit, although not that much more expensive. The problem is that Apple don't make any 'entry-level'/cheap stuff, so you'll always be able to get a cheapo Windows laptop or whatever for much less than what a Macbook would cost.

I run a few Macs, my main machine is a 2012 Macbook Pro Retina with an I7 processor, 16GB ram and a 500GB hard disk. I run Parallels as a VM to seamlessly run Windows applications alongside OS/X stuff. It's just as fast and reliable today as it was the day I bought it, whereas before I switched to Macs I tended to buy a new laptop every couple of years.

One canard that is often touted around is that you can't get under the covers/technical with Macs, which is untrue. OS/X is a Unix variant, and all the unix techie stuff is all there should you want to furtle.

No contest after years working with pc's now retired, started with I pad a few years ago convinced me to purchase a mac book pro now I have just bought iMac
For me the benifit is no antivirus required (it's a bit like toilet paper for a dog not necessary)
Also the required for start up and shut down is much quicker than the pc

Regards

John

If it is the style of the Mac why not get it running Windows. Easily done....

Whoa ... that is a dangerous! The risks may be lower but only because Apple's market share is lower and therefore not such a lucrative target for virus writers. There is nothing in OS X that makes it immune to viruses.

For what is worth, ( and I admit to not knowing a lot about computers ) I think windows on a laptop is great for everyday surfing but NOT with Windows 8. It is rubbish !!!!! It is constantly up dating and, even when I manage to get it back to Desktop, it always unpins explorer which is what I like to use.

I wish I had bought an i-pad, but I will have to live with it for now as the laptop is only 3 weeks old.

Windows 8, NO don't do it !!!!

I have been working with computers since Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were still at high school. I am, or at least was, more of a generalist than a specialist and followed a career path of programmer, sales, tech support, management, consulting, the finally support and training (whilst semi retired).

I am not right up to the minute like some of our members who are still working in the industry but I have no problem setting up and maintaining small business networks and systems, and general software support.

This ramble is to say that I don't think of myself as a complete bunny when it comes to computer tech.

swmbo jnr was given an iPad which I use more than she does, she uses her Windows laptop. When I get a replacement for it it will be Android (in reality it is almost impossible to tell the difference but I find Android fractionally more intuitive to use).

In our household the cell phones are Samsung Android, the TV Samsung. They can be integrated but in practice we don't. My newish computer is Windows 8.1 and I don't have any problems with it (true I have "adjusted" a couple of small things). It too can be integrated with the TV as can the iPad. Personally I think all this business of integration is somewhat overrated and Apple leans on it too much in their publicity. They just want you to get totally locked in on their products. In any case there are about a million ways (slight exaggeration) in which data, images and video can be shared between your devices.

This brings us to swmbo's laptop. It is a MacBook. To put it mildly I simply can not stand it. I can never find anything and nothing works the way you would expect it too. IT thinks you don't have a brain and IT decides where it is going to put your files and heaven help you if you want to find them again to use in some other way. In effect you give over control to the machine. I find it the most frustrating piece of computer equipment I have ever used and that is saying something. The first time Apple gave me this sort of frustration was with the ill fated Lisa and I hope the last is with the MacBook.

The speed you experienced is more representative of newer technology and hardware than the OS. I'm working on a desktop system but I find Windows 8.1 plenty fast enough. Nearly all the programs I use are General Public License (GPL) and if I like the software I have been known to make a donation. I use Libre Office, and Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. You can get these for Mac too.

I really like Linux by the way but I have not spent enough time to really use it as an alternative to Windows.

Sorry about the long rant hide

Last night by some strange chance I was channel flicking and landed on a program about computer technology. It seems that the sales of tablets are falling and the current trend is very much towards multi use devices. For example a phone that slides into a dock that is at the back of a 10" screen to become a tablet with a large battery capacity, tablets that have keyboard docking stations, and powerful tablets that may become notebook computers by attaching to a keyboard that can be folded up like a notebook.

One of the latest developments is an Asus transformer (can be a tablet or undock to become a notebook) that seamlessly and instantly switches between Windows 8.x and Android depending on the application. The benefit is Windows for office stuff and Android for portable apps. In fact I think it is just a matter of time before we a move to Android as an alternative OS but a Windows emulator such as Wine would be needed for backward compatability, but since Android itself is based on Linux that should not be so difficult.

If I was in the market for a notebook I think it would be something I would find very interesting.

I like Computeractive mag - consumer focused and not too teccy. Apple laptop is a best buy but double the cost of my Fujitsu which does everything I want it to do with no incompatible software issues so hard to justify.

Every combined notebook/tablet device where the tablet clips to a keyboard they test is flawed according to them.

Ipad, is like a fifth limb now - difficult to manage without it - what did we do before?

Love my Samsung note too - big but beautiful.

Bet the national stereotype of a Morgan owner is not a tech user?
