Step forward chunky for further advice please.
or does Peter's graph suggest that cams might gain an extra 10 - 15 bhp? and would it still be a doddle around town?

Hi Peter,
I see that you have fitted the long TB's, do these fit under the bonnet or have you had to add a Super Sport scoop on the side? Also, is there any noticeable reduction in torque at lower revs? The TB's just fit under the bonnet but a little more clearance would be better. A Super Sport scoop would be great. Torque is only a little more at low revs but the curve is better. You have to learn a smoother approach to using the throttle. Stamping on the throttle at low revs gives the engine too much charge and you are better off feeding in the right amount of throttle to get the best acceleration. If you really want fast acceleration it is better to drop back one or two gears and then you can stamp on the loud pedal

Thats really interesting. I think (but I'm not 100% sure)when they run a car on the dyno, it's generally at full throttle and this can show a drop in low down torque. Talking to Northampton Motorsport I believe that the Duratec inlet manifold has vanes which operate at low revs to accelerate the flow. Perhaps the butterfly's in the TB has the same effect when they are partially open.

4th gear 4500 rpm : 139 km/h (86 mph) 5th gear 182 km/h (113 mph) Really! I don't think that can be possible. These speeds at 4500 rpm correspond to the gear ratios used on my 2005 PLUS 4. It means that with this engine tuning you don't have any benefits with the 4th and 5th gear on the road... if you want to keep your licence. You are higher than the speed limits (in France): 90 km/h on normal roads and 130 km/h on highways. You can only get increased acceleration on 1/2/3 gear. On my 2005 PLUS 4, with 3rd gear @ 4500 rpm, the corresponding speed is 100km/h (~60 mph)... higher than normal road limit. With the gear ratios of my PLUS 4, it could be fine to get more power below 4000 rpm, or to have gear ratios which provide higher revs, ie 6000 rpm @ 180 km/h with 5th. With this configuration you will get higher acceleration on all gears. At the moment with all the controls and radars you can do acceleration to 90 km/h with 1/2/3 and after you lift your foot to don't get a fee and keep your licence. In those circumstanses you need torque and power below 4000 rpm, except if you race.

I always thought of the Plus 4 as the sports model and the 4/4 as the car for pottering around in.
Certainly that's how it used to be. Used to be when? I don't think Morgan have ever made a car just for "pottering around in", for long periods in the 4/4's illustrious history there hasn't even been a Plus4 model. I'm with Heinz on this, the agile 4/4 is the Morgan in its purist form. Putting additional power in the more corpulent models does not make them any more of a sports car. ~iw

Absolutely, Ian! It would be unnecessarily provocative to suggest that large capacity torquey motors are for people who are prepared to spend more than they need to on fuel in order to compensate for a lack of skill in changing gear (only joshing guys, I'm just jealous I can't afford a Supersport )

Having a had a +4SS for a few months last year found I was already breaking legal speed limits in 3rd gear. Just love the pure unmolested fun of my 4/4 Sport.
