I noticed that my orange breather valve cap on the bevel box wouldn't screw in properly because the threads were stripped, so I ordered a new cap.

However, the new one I received is missing the metal piece that is on the old one. Does anyone know the purpose of this metal piece and if it's necessary?

I've attached a photo of the old cap vs the new one.

Not looked at mine recently to remember whether or not it has the metal insert, but I suspect it's a magnet to catch BB detritus that flies around in there. Maybe.

My build date was July 2014. Was yours built before or after?

Good point R1NGA - I'll test it to see if it is magnetized.

Mine has the metal tube, 2013 build. From memory it is just a hollow aluminium tube, no magnet.

No magnet in mine, I think it is there just to stop nuisance venting of oil but will still allow air to pass through.

This is purely speculation on my part, but after reading all the posts about the BB many months ago and no one really knew how full to fill the box, I believe it may be a dip stick of sorts.

Any BB or other differential that I've ever seen are NOT filled to the top as some here have been doing through the upper top orange cap hole.

My guess is that you fill it up until you touch oil with it and that's as full as you fill it.

Again, I'm only guessing as I do not own a M3W and have no direct hands on with one.

Other guesses as to what it is???
