I would suspect a failing fuel pump relay or the pickup for the immobiliser slipping.
Always carry a relay, the modern ones seem to fail with monotonous regularity.
The immobiliser pickup slipping is not common, but several have suffered (with others losing the chip from the car's ignition key). Worth checking whether your spare key will start the car. However, as you manged to start the engine after several attempts at the supermarket I suspect a slipping pickup is more likely.

If this is a similar to set-up to Ford-era Volvos, there will be a sequence over-ride to the immobiliser system.

While on the subject, what type of relay do I need to keep as spares and where are they on a 2007 1800 duratec. Not used to all this modern stuff? Thanks in advance for any information.

Relays must be diode protected. I've had some from Land Rover specialists and I think it was Mouser, an electronics supplier.

Details here for a 2005 2000 Duratec which will probably be the same.

Will pop over tomorrow with the spare key to see if I can start it. If I can it's going straight to the garage. If I can't, I'll be asking them to come and get it. Will ask them about a spare relay as well. Do these parts fail on fords just as often?!

Regarding relays; in 13 years of ownership and 40,000 + miles in my 4/4, I’ve had two relays fail (fuel pump and cooling fan).
The relays on my car are situated in the fuse box, under the bonnet.
I have them labelled, just in case and always carry a spare.

This relay will work in the fuel pump relay or cooling fan position and is diode protected thus avoiding back emf transients damaging the ECU.

On my car the ecu can flash out some usful fault codes via the PATS led if It fails to start under certain conditions. If when you turn the key and the led flashes quickly after a while it will then flash out a code. I think it's 11 for a fault on the immobiliser ignition tranciever coil.

Being a sad old git who hates electonics I have a coil in my spares box too. As it contains it's own chip on a pcb it will probably fail at some point.  Its a critical item as there is no way the ecu will run the car without it.They can be picked up on ebay for a few quid second hand (they are not coded to the ecu).

Well, as an update I went into Exeter with my spare keys this morning and tried the Morgan. No dice. So, I thought, why not swap the relays around, see if that does anything. From the diagram I assumed relay 1 and two would be starting from the left, so I swapped them over and bingo! Car started fine. Switched off, rang Berrybrook and stsrted the car again on my way to get a new relay.
Get to Berrybrook, switch off. Lovely mechanic there has a look, takes the relays out and puts them back and then we can't start the car at all. I leave it with him and go off to Powderham for a coffee and when I come back he tells me he's replaced the fuel pump relay which was faulty, but it wasn't either of the ones I fiddled with as the position one relay (starter) is the right hand side and the fuel pump is number 2, next to it-How very odd!
Anyway, all seems ok now, I've asked them to get me a spare, and they say that while it was a known problem with older 4/4s this is the first recent one they've known to fail.
Thanks to all who suggested it as a solution, it does seem odd that the car restarted in the supermarket on Sunday after several attempts but there we are. Hopefully that's an end to it and thanks to Bradley at Berrybrook who is an absolute gentleman.
