We were watching one of those dreadful cooking shows the other day and a mention was made of Worcestershire sauce.

Now several languages have variations on how 'c' followed by a vowel is pronounced. In Italian 'ci' is pronounce as though it was followed by a 'h' in English - perhaps like the 'ch' in cheese. The word 'cheese' in Italian would be read as though the 'ch' was a 'k'.

The Italian cook on show pronounced it 'Wor-chester-shire sauce' (obviously wrong).

How do you pronounce it?

Wuster.

Bear in mind that Yorkshire has a strange take on pronunciation.

Yes it is one of those strange local errors.

Woster or Wuster as outlined above. We quietly cringe inside when someone "cester" or even the "shire" on the word.

Agree with the Wuster bit but what about the Shire bit.

Shire like the horse or Sheer like ladies stockings?

I go for Wustersheer sauce

We just say Wuster Sauce.

Obviously Henderson's Relish is way better.

Lea and Perrins used to be the only company allowed to call it "Worcester" (or Wustersheer?) Sauce .

All other manufactures had to called it Worcestershire sauce. Not sure of that is still the case for their trade mark, or if it has expired over time.
