Why electric cars still don’t live up to the hype
Interesting article from the Washington Post.

Although I still think electric cars are a blind alley, just before Christmas my nextdoor neighbour had an I-Pace Jaguar up his drive and boy do those things shift. 0-60 in around 4 seconds in near silence but he was panicking when he found after his journey he only had 5 miles of sparks left and had to face a massive re charge period at home via a 13 amp socket.

Here for a good time not a long time!!

Reality is that in 2040 latest you arent going to be allowed a choice if you want a new car. We are in a changeover period right now and inevitably the technology still has some way to go. But I would be surprised if our next family car / dog carrier werent fully electric.

If the car has a 300 mile range and you have proper overnight home charging facilities then for most people it would cover all their useage

It is not so much the problem of charging that needs to be surmounted but there are questions about the total life environmental impact, cost of vehicles by comparison to ICE, battery life and replacement, disposal of used batteries, etc. Standards need to be established so that power plugs and batteries are absolutely standardised. Like so many things these days, such as ink cartridges for printers, not only does every manufacturer do it differently but even similar models from the same manufacturer may be different. What is needed is a standardised rack mounting system that, unfortunately, will have to be obligatory by law, as will have to be charging systems.

Tesla range quotes should be taken with a very large pinch of salt in the real world.... Friend of mine was looking at one for work. He needed to tow a lightish trailer (something his current disco didn't even know was on the back).... Tesla were very cagy as to range towing .... Ended up him getting a 'weekend test drive' (which they will do if you're a serious sales prospect) to try it out .... Did less than half the quoted range and just squeaked home .... He bought a new Disco.

Also heard of small electric vans who's claimed range suffered catastrophically when the lads actually put their tool boxes in them..... Still a way to go yet in real world (read:not just swishing a mile up the road to Harrods so everyone can see how green you are) ..... Can't imagine a current replacement for my defender, able to spend an hour plus as a battering ram and shovel holder just to get to the end of my drive through the snow drifts in the middle of winter.

They may get there... But they're not there yet in real life

K
