Someone I know has taken on the task of planning a few drive out days, and would like to get hold of some route planning software that will: Fit on a windows laptop and hopefully an apple smartphone Allow him to specify a route without continually replanning it for him Allow downloading onto (preferably) waze or similar Be manageable by a brainless >55 year old. ( him, not me)
Please note that I’m asking on behalf of a friend who is a complete duffer with computers. He sends his thanks in advance for any suitable suggestions. Lacking any of those, unsuitable suggestions would be acceptable

TomTom have an app that allows you to create routes and download them to your TomTom device. Works well but you have to insert way-points in order that the machine does not re-plan the route. I use this for holidays but usually plan routes on the device once away. The advantage of TomTom (and I think Waze) is the auto re-route to avoid dense traffic available on the more expensive models.
ViewRanger works on multiple platforms - I use it for walks but you have to pay for OS maps to use on it. Not sure is it is suitable for Waze or similar.
For planning scenic runs - we have always driven the route before hand and produced a “tulip” style set of instructions.
Be interested in the other responses.

Donald you just fired off so many memory cells in my grey matter......
Potti course anyone? I still have one of his Romer’s somewhere
Happy days
If it were me I would (and still do) always use tulips, either on a pad of tear off Post It’s or my preference is a simple spiral bound writing book and put yard/mileage between each symbol. Dead easy to read at a glance and can be taught to anyone in minutes. No need to get fancy, just be very descriptive.

I have a Garmin satnav and a month ago I downloaded software onto my laptop. It allows preplanning of routes with options to locate waypoints such as restaurants, places of interest, etc. and upload the plan to the satnav. I have just started playing with it so can’t comment on it yet. I will be testing it out on some local drives to see how it works. I’ll compare it to regular routes I already use as a learning exercise. In the past I have also used Google maps to plan routes. The measuring tool helps get distances and street view enabled getting visuals at strategic points such as junctions.
