Howard, the hot hatches have a ride that will never match that of a C Class or 3 Series. Which is why I've just bought the C63 Estate. A C43 estate would also be great.

Try an Audi A1 Sportback S line Competition 40TFSI S Tronic to give it its full title. Fortunately it only says A1 on the back! Bought one for SWMBO and it goes like stink (200PS) and returms over 45mpg on petrol. What's not to like?

Big savings to be made on the Alfa Giulia 2.9 V6 Quadrifoglio. 500 bhp 2.9 V6 Bi-Turbo (effectively a ferrari engine less two cylinders). I have driven modern Jaguars and hate the lifeless blancmange steering. BMW is better with at least some feel (I have a 340i). However, having driven the Alfa (great steering feel) I'm very tempted to buy one. Try it -- just the sound of the engine revving will win you over. In Italy (though not in RHD) you can even get one with a manual gearbox.

BMWZ3M - ugly as hell, but practical. You can put the dog or shopping in the back. They are manual gearbox with minimal driver aids and are at least going to hold their value if not increase.

Golf R Estate Well stuffed GTi if you like 2WD/FWD instead of 4WD.
If you are after RWD it becomes more interesting C43 as Peter mentions. If you can find a good condition older C Estate with the 6.2L natural V8 that was wicked The W212 E63 previous shape was a loon and built well in saloon or estate, possible too much heavy metal? BMW M135i with some bits from Birds (suspension and LSD) to enhance the ride and response
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Thats one I am aware of and is on the list. Marmota - too big, too lumpy and festooned with electronics that in a British car spell trouble. I'm thinking of a saloon equivalent of the PlusFour in the sense that its light, small, and as far as is possible these days is anti technology. I understand the greasy bits. I dont understand those based on electrons migrating across barriers betweeen dissimilar metals . And I do not want any sort of infotainment - if I want music then I sing to myself. And sometimes the dog joins in! The problem today is that any new modern car is gathered with electronic gadgets and much more we don't see under the bonnet... unless you buy a Japanese or a Korean basic model, you'll have plenty of these "silly" gadgets in the dashboard Maybe looking at the second hand market you may still find some jewels without too much electronic and old school big blocks. I'm thinking about some Volvos... V40 and V60 are quite good machines and generally reliable. But you can't expect a super performant engine If you feel nostalgic of old school big British cars... remember my Range Rover Vogue SE is for sale ! In that one the only electronic thing is the fuel injection

Test drive nearly clinched it - but fixed (ie non-folding) rear seat - not even a ski hatch - got me out of trouble with , who wasn't keen. Now I think I heard that 2020 edition has a folding rear seat. Anyone know? I've been studiously avoiding the Alfa dealer in case I get tempted.

Which is why the ultra modern A35 had to go, far too much "nanny state" involvement. The 2018 C63 has only distance warning, nothing else, and that is fine by me.

Ive had BMWs, Audis, Mercs and an Alfa and still prefer BMWs and there are some great offers around.
I think you will find more 2 series Active tourers for sale than 3 series estates as the 2 series is probably bigger and more practical. My wife had a 2 series diesel whixh was a great car before getting an X1. Both are great for the dog and practical.
I haven had a single fault with my wifes last 2 BMWs. My wife did choose an Alfa 156 some years ago which did have great steering and handling but started to fall apart just out of warranty and servicing was very expensive. Good job it was a company car but I wouldnt buy one with my own money.
