I'm in a similar situation. Keep looking at the Golf R but despite it's obvious competence and performance it's just so bland to look at.
Q cars are one thing but VW have taken it to a new level, the GTi is better looking IMHO.
The new Mini Clubman John Cooper Works is at the other end of the spectrum. I like it but am I brave enough to buy one ? The "blandness" of VW is such a huge attraction to me. Day to day I don't want a "look at me" car, so VW fits the bill really well. It does what it says on the tin. Whereas Audi, sold for "image" is no better than VW in terms of driver experience. The A4 we rented, and which I really did expect to love, was just too bland as an overall experience. I've droned on about this so many times, but for me, a car must look appealing (to me), be a special place to sit in, and a capable mile eater. Good mpg is a bonus but not essential. My measure is that if I sit in any car and immediately want one......it's the car for me. But not many do this. The ones which do I keep a long time, usually over ten years and sometimes much longer.

A left field suggestion - a BMW i3. Does everything a Golf would do, with less of the bland design. New, you'd probably find a dealer could be persuaded to fit your budget. Used, you'll have plenty of choice, and £10k left. Personally I'd buy a range extender version (Not now available new, and with a petrol engine) - it probably depends on how you'd plan to use the car, and the state fo the public charging infrastructure in the places you travel to. The i3 looks so innocent - but to quote EVO "it accelerates from 50mph to 74.5mph (120km/h) in just 4.9 seconds - only 0.6 seconds slower than the DCT-equipped BMW M4" so there's potential fun to be had.

Not many EV's appeal to me but the i3s always makes me look twice and wonder! I love street sleepers.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Big savings to be made on the Alfa Giulia 2.9 V6 Quadrifoglio. 500 bhp 2.9 V6 Bi-Turbo (effectively a ferrari engine less two cylinders). I have driven modern Jaguars and hate the lifeless blancmange steering. BMW is better with at least some feel (I have a 340i). However, having driven the Alfa (great steering feel) I'm very tempted to buy one. Try it -- just the sound of the engine revving will win you over. In Italy (though not in RHD) you can even get one with a manual gearbox. That's a great shout. The Guilia V6 sounds amazing, and the reviews I've read have all been very positive The downside is how Alfas age, high depreciation and the after sales service.

Knowing the Audi programme pretty well - it is the S3 to be recommendet. If you loved the Elise - that is the one for you. The S1 one is a fantastic sportscar. I have never seen one who is able to drive it in a calm manner. The S3 is a true multi tool!

At work we keep looking at full electric vehicles and from test drives etc we have worked out a basic rule of thumb of 50% WLTP. Whereas petrol/diesel is 25% deduction or is it because its an i8 and you haven't been hanging around in it

Slightly left field - what about a Skoda Octavia VRS estate? 245 bhp, 4 wheel drive, VW group build quality, nobody looks twice, and on the Skoda website (can’t make link work) is a 2020 car in black for £32k.. Some folk here might sneer at the Skoda badge but after a string of unfulfilling and occasionally unreliable German and British “prestige” cars, my Skoda Superb estate is one of the best cars I’ve ever owned! (I would have suggested a Superb with the 280 bhp engine but they are a physically big car, nearer to E class size than C class/3 series).. Take a look....go on.....you know you want to

I have always found recent Skodas very well built and good value for money. I have had several as long term hire cars.
