Just wondering what percentage of M3W drivers/passengers wear a helmet when out on the road? Having recently become a proud M3W owner, I`m considering purchasing one, might keep my ears warmer in the winter months anyway.

One factor is your height - as a 1.95m person, my head is well in airflow so risk (and reality) of being hit by objects thrown up by vehicles ahead/passing means wearing a helmet makes sense and it cuts the noise. If you are shorter of stature, the screens will provide more protection and your choice might be different.

Good eye-protection is an imperative though....

I always wore a helmet on longer or faster motorway journeys, not so much for safety as comfort. There was a speed range that caused some involuntary head movement in the airflow (and I'm not tall) but easy to go faster

I cuts noise and helps keep you warmer in cold weather, AND if you are talking to your co-pilot get a Bluetooth communicator and it also makes music listening easier and you can answer the phone if that is of consequence.

I have a Bell Pitman with a winter collar that comes out when the temps dip. It also comes in handy about June when the June bugs are out and about. One of those suckers in the forehead while doing 60 mph will make your day...

My choice of head attire for the hot summer months is a white cotton flying helmet with aviator goggles, protects the head and neck from sunburn whilst providing ear protection and not having caps flying off also looks the part of Biggles of The Camel Squadron. For winter and when raining I use a part open visor helmet, it also depends on local jurisdiction as to whether a helmet is required.

I remember years ago when I started researching safety equipment for taking my car to the track. I learned about how surprisingly far a persons body moves during a crash especially if only restrained with a single seat belt. I try to wear a helmet in any car with a roll bar near my cranium. Especially if the bar is not heavily padded. I wear it to protect my head from hitting the roll bar first, and other impacts second.

If it's cold out, I wear a helmet. In bright, sunny days, I wear a river hat with neck "curtain" for sun protection unless I plan freeway speeds. The front of the hat gets blown up at speed, exposing my dainty visage to the ravages of the sun, so back to the helmet. My helmet is bluetooth equipped but I haven't charged it in years. Somebody might want to phone me in the middle of a ride. Talk about a buzz kill.
