Can anyone offer any tips on how to adjust the wiper arms and blades to stop the blades judddering on the screen. There seems to be a lot of slack in all the pivot points on the blades. I hightened the rivets etc a bit, but it made little difference. Or is this just how they all are (rubbish)!

Dry judder or wet judder? Usually it's about the blade angle. The blade should just flip from side to side on change of direction. This is how I'd try to fix it: Keep the screen wet with either Fast Glass, or Rain X. Take two of the blades & arms off, Adjust the remaining blade until it sweeps smoothly. Fit number 2 and repeat. Fit number 3 and repeat. It will be very fiddly but this should do it.

Hi Dave It's wet judder, I have the outer two slightly better, but the middle one is still not good. I squeezed the rivets a bit to take out some of the slack and squeezed the arm to blade fittings. I already have the screen treated with Rain-x I have used it on all my cars for a long time. I also see that on the sweep the blades go over the edge of the screen frame, I can't see how to eliminate this, as it is the total sweep angle on the motor assembly.

You might be able to lift the arms one notch on the splined boss to stop the overlap with the frame. Take one arm off and see how it sits if you lift it one spline. It will sweep slightly further on the other end. If that works do the others the same. Watch the centre blade closely and see if the bias is the same in each direction. The other option is to reduce the pressure slightly by bending the arm away from the screen. While the arms are off you could swop the positions to see if the centre arm is happier at one end.

I haved already moved the blades on the splines, if I move them up another spline, then they hit the frame on the other end of the stroke. How do your work, are they quiet and not juddery? I'm having some issues with this car, the indicators are now not functioning, the flasher unit has packed up, I'm waiting for a replacement to be sent.

Check whether you can adjust the length of the arm of the wiper. On my car I was able to adjust the arms so they did not overrun on the sides of screen. (There is adjustment where the spring attaches on my arm - 2002 car)

The flat part of the top of the arm should be parallel to the windscreen glass, if it isn't it's likely the blade edges are not flipping over correctly, causing the judder... To get them in parallel, you'll need to do a little juggling in a vice to twist the arm slightly... Still need to do mine! There was a short article about this in Miscellany a couple of years ago.

It could also be the type of blades fitted. I had this issue with some blades on the Alfa and the problem went away when I fitted rather more costly Bosch blades.

I have never managed to get mine completely judder free in 6 years with the car; adjustment and general fettling have temporarily improved the situation, but never eliminated it! However since having the new hood fitted I have solved the issue of more water on the inside of the windscreen than the outside. The other solution is to do what 2 of our party did in 2007 en-route to Le Mans (a particularly wet year). No hood and just aero screens
