I worked out on a recent Danube river cruise that it was on a par per night & the food etc far better than our local care home where my MIL stayed.

This is likely to be a small thread drift, but, I often have conversations with my wife about my spending on toys, (cars, boats, bikes etc) against her wish to have many nice and expensive holidays. My feeling are, that if I buy, say my little 23', 18 year old sail boat for £15,000, against her wishes for us both to have a nice holiday in the Antipodes for much the same price, on our return there are only fading memories of a lovely 4 weeks of our lives, whilst with the toys, we still have a lot of fun, different admittedly, and I will still get 50% - 80% of my original capital back, less of course running costs.
This of course makes it much easier to do the man maths, which is what we are talking about here, bringing it nicely back on topic. :-) Great minds think alike, you summed up my feelings exactly. The wife keeps bringing up short breaks at Michelin starred restaurants for often stupid money, one example they sell wine by the glass for between £25 and £35 a glass for inexpensive eg NZ type wines. There's piss taking then there's real piss taking! Although one does have the memory of an excellent meal , in all fairness if past history is to go by I can't even remember what I eat last time I stayed and dined at the Ritz only a few years ago. Toys can be a little more enduring. Maybe it's the difference between mine and Sue's mind sets. Having said that I remember a meal I had in the late 70's up in the hills around Turin, the exclusive restaurant which used to supply truffle pate to Harrods, simple Italian dishes well executed, and it surprisingly wasn't that expensive..

I worked out on a recent Danube river cruise that it was on a par per night & the food etc far better than our local care home where my MIL stayed. My daughter who is an opera singer used to go on opera based cruises where they performed and ran amateur courses etc. They always had several passengers who would be onboard a ship for over a year claiming it was far better value and more fun than the care home option. They even had some passengers who clearly had Alzheimer's who had been placed there by children needing a break. They also always had spare cabins for the passengers who died during the cruise! Nick

My Mog also took 5 years, but I did it the other way round - stuck it all on credit cards and then paid it off.
Did the same with the MG, and with the Harley. My aim is to die with no savings and a large credit card debt...... I like your way of thinking 👍

More of a DINK.
Never wanted kids, so the 'yet' didn't apply. With my job, having kids would be a bit of a busmans holiday....
