Really sad to read this news today, what a life he had and so sad for his family that he should be taken this way, fly high Richard with your Mum and Dad.
Tragically, on 15th October Richard Grace passed away. A man with huge significance to the warbird world, Richard always had time for enthusiasts, showing an interest and engaging with them at events. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with him on the few occasions that we met. - Born into an aviation family, Richard’s father, Nick Grace, returned the legendary Spitfire Tr.IX ML407 to flight in 1985. After his passing, Richard’s mother, Carolyn Grace, learnt to fly ML407 and became a mainstay of the display circuit. From a young age Richard developed his knowledge and experience in engineering and then learnt to fly, he first flew ML407 in 2007. Over the years he gained experience in airshow flying and went on to become a highly respected engineer and pilot of vintage aircraft. - Following Carolyn's retirement, the Grace family business, Air Leasing, was managed by Richard and it soon became one of the most prolific historic aircraft workshops in the world. Richard’s knowledge and charisma saw Air Leasing grow as it began operating aircraft on behalf of owners and undertook significant restoration projects; four Hispano Buchons, Hawker Tempest, Lockheed Electra 12a, Seafire, Spitfires and Mustangs. Richard also provided the incredible opportunity for select pilots and engineers to become involved with Air Leasing. Under the Ultimate Warbird Flights brand, Air Leasing has been operating flight experiences, airshow displays, and in 2019 and 2021 fielded the Ultimate Warbirds display team. Richard was the driving force behind this year's Sywell 2024 airshow, all whilst battling with his illness. The success of the show is a fitting addition to his legacy. - Taken at such a young age, my thoughts are with his wife Daisy and their two young children, his close friends and family, and the team at Air Leasing. His lasting impression and contribution to the entire historic aviation community, whether that be with owners, engineers, pilots, event organizers or enthusiasts, will always be remembered. Sad indeed but a testament to their collective restoration and flying skills that none of them died flying. Richard was only 4 when his father was killed in a car accident and I recall the BBC documentary in the early 90's detailing Nick's Spitfire rebuild whilst Carolyn wheeled her son around in a pram. Carolyn already a qualified pilot gave tribute to him by not only converting to the Spitfire but mastering it to display level. May they all RIP.
