Sobering indeed - My sister in law died from a lung condition brought on by living close to motorways near Woodford Green London. Not a pleasant way to go, with oxygen by the bedside. The majority of such polution is brake dust and tyre dust as well as exhaust fumes. Perhaps the time has arrived when face masks are required to make our driving safer to enjoy.

"air pollution" Clearly never a good thing. & you might have noticed that the article was about pollution in general, without naming sources. Most folks' working presumption would be that internal combustion engines contribute most to that pollution. it's not & there's plenty of research around suggesting that the brakes and tyres on heavier EV cars produce more toxic pollutants than even diesel exhausts https://gprivate.com/6gae3So that would be an argument to drive the lightest possible petrol cars :-) Will

Most of ours I suspect come from the plethora of huge container vessels floating by offshore, combined with the crazy amount of diesel leisure boats mostly diesel.
Everyone appears to want a stinking wood burner too and lots surrounding us stink and deposit black particulate, EV will never be a thing down here unless we see a logarithmic advance in cells at realistic pricing levels.

It is a sad fact, that you die whether you worry or don`t, the choice to worry or not is ours...
I have worked under floors, in attics and in all manner of unhealthy situations as an apprentice, dust and muck of all kinds filled the air in days long before the H&S at work regs took hold.... Worked in my garage welding, rubbing cataloy with dust everywhere, spray painting, took on a long terms self-build, digging the foundations to fixing the ridge tiles and everything in between, before retirement I was regularly swept by radar at close quarters, ILS, X-rays, aircraft fuel and so much more... and now past my mid seventies I am still here...Whereas my little lady who was so very health conscious in terms of regular exercise, eating all sorts of health foods, she ever tried to slip some into my menu on occasion...(-: Cancer took her in May 2023.... As our American cousins say.... Go figure..!
Perhaps best to enjoy that which we have while we have it...?

As you say George .... when you look at the age pyramid for the UK the bulk of people now live into old age and many, if not most, of the old killer diseases have been blunted ... I guess as the mass killers are ticked off more people will die of things that were disregarded before .... if someone dies at 98 and a coroner notes air polution as a contributory cause then we're not doing too bad!

I hardly touch my brakes in my PHEV. Lift the pedal and the car brakes to a stop. EV drivers are advised to use their brakes occasionally just to ensure the disks and pads are kept clean. Tyre wear is a different matter.
