Did a run out early this morning in the Morgan so that I could grab some before they sold out, and yes it was worth it $3.90 each so they are not giving them away but delicious traditional taste with no hint of ethanol, I have scoffed three with my coffee so may have to have a lie down now.

Yes Simon, they are very similar and probably vary mainly in the shape. The other altenative at Christmas is Pandoro which is similat but without any candied fruit. Pandoro is served with a dusting of icing sugar (included in the packet). There is always a debate at Christmas as to which is best; Panettone or Pandoro. I like them both but I am not so keen on some of the modern variations.

Maria always had a Panettone and I had a Pandoro, it was the same in our home!

Back on the main subject, I just got back from a quick trip to Waitrose, decided to have a pack of their Bueberry Hot Cross Buns.

Settled down with a cup of tea to try one, and blimey, they're almost inedible, very weird taste. Shan't be buying any more.

Because of the inclement weather here, blowing a gale and raining, I decided a solo Easter cruise was not to be -so picked up some standard supermarket hot cross buns this morning-for TM testing of course ,and what do you know -a definite ethanol type taste, so the big guys are copying whatever they do in the UK! Though the price of 6 is only the price of 1.5 Bakery ones I know which I shall be sticking to from now on..

Being a cheap skate at heart, my Lidl's buns were great. even if the strawberry jam cost more than the buns.

As much as I don't wish 'petrol tasting hot cross buns on anyone, it is nice to know that I am not imagining it! laugh2

Since the post, I've had lovely ones from Betty's (Harrogate), as well as a more local bakery and none had the strange taste profile.

Should we start a pole of what people put on them!

I have to admit, most of the time I like them toasted and keep it simple, with just butter... have tried a variety of jams and marmalades but always return to good old butter, melted on a warm bun. cloud9

We’re also in Auckland at the moment but we had homemade buns yesterday, courtesy of our Daughter in Law. They were excellent and she baked some more today.

Ps haven’t seen a single Mog here, nor in Nelson last week.

I'm not sure what ethanol tastes like, so haven't detected it. Lightly toasted bun with butter and occasionally toffee apple curd (courtesy of English Heritage shop(s)) smile
