Hi. Can anyone recommend a garage who can balance my wire wheels - Central Belt of Scotland? Secondly - Can the balance weights go on the inside of the wheels so I dont have the look of the wheels spoiled or damage to the rims with bang on weights? The classic car specialist nearest to me insist that the weights must go on the outside of the wheel. The wheels are stainless steel and look fantsatic on the car so the last thing I want is to stick a bunch of weights on the outside of them! Thanks for your help

Snowcol, I’ve had my 4/4 for 14 years & it has never had weights on the outside of the wheels. Have you spoken to Revolutions in Perth. They are a great outfit & I am sure they’d be happy to advise.

Thanks IcePack - That's what I thought. I had the car in at a local Classic car specialist for MOT and mechanical check over ahead of a big road trip this summer. They advised me the wheels needed balancing - I asked for weights on the inside of the wheels but they assured me that they would not balance that way - the only way to balance them was weights on the outside. I went to collect the car yesterday and found they have removed the balance weights that were on the inside of the wheels but left the wheels with no balance weights! ie they have unbalanced the wheels!!! I am now reluctant to take the car back there for them to rectify it. Hence looking to find a reliable company to do this for me.

I have had my 4/4 for a number of years and never had weights on the outside also never had knock on weights either. Have a you local Motorbike service place near you? I have mine done at a tyre centre that specialises in bike tyres ,they have the special cones for balancing and treat the rims with respect.

I have a set of Smoothride cones available for £40. These will allow balancing wires on most wheel balancers. Located on the Costa Clyde in Ayrshire! If interested, pm me for details.

For info - I just spoke with revolutions. Theyadvise that it is possible the balance weights must go on the outside - it depends entirely on where the wheel is out of balance / needs the weight. They dont balance the wheels themselves but use a local garage.

Never having had to balance a wire wheel..... I suspect the issue may having the correct shaped kit to grip the wheel centre in their wheel balancing machine..? As for balance weights as a m/cyclist in my yoof, I remember seeing chromed weights that fitted over the spokes and sild down to be held by the spoke nipple.... Thus my guess is it might be worth checking out m/cycle dealerships that deal in classic m/cycles if you do not want to have weights stuck to the rims of your wire wheels... also phone around the tyre fitters in your area...? Hope you have a good outcome, if so please let us know how you get on..

Hi Snowcol, For information, I had both my cars with wires balanced ,by Vintage Tyes Beaulieu, they used stick on weights on the inside of the wheels, they then covered the lead weights with a nice shiny chrome piece of tape, so virtually disappeared. Hope you find a local solution.

Maybe worth contacting your local VSCC members, to see who they recommend? Bud 4/4-Stanley

Mine are painted wires with bang-on weights .... my local tyre fitter seems to have no problems balancing the wheels on his normal machine.
As for your query ... I've had several sets of race wheels balanced where, because of caliper and suspension clearance, the weights have to be restricted to quite small bands of the inner rim ... they huff a bit but have never failed to balance the wheels in spite of the constraints ... don't let them fob you off for an easy life ... even if the young lad has to hand the job over to the experienced old-stager! 🙂
