Some photos;
First one shows one of the three lobed cylindrical ramps beside the compensator housing.
Second shows the spring pack that pushes them together.
Third shows the grease packed compensator mounted on the engine output shaft with the grease nipple visible.
Last photo shows the compensator bell housing with the drilled hole for access to the grease nipple and the long slot for the steering rack.

You're welcome...I couldn't work out what it actually was till I saw inside it either.
I do wonder if the reason for a lot of noisy compensators is that the grease had been squeezed out which simply allowed things to become noisy but still actually work with no way of re-packing them without a strip down?

I think not just squeezed but spun out when working and then unable to get back between the surfaces. Lets hope they are packed full enough for the lube to spin back in at the right time

Great series of photos - many thanks Calum.
Is there a known spec for this grease ?
Any idea how often it should be checked, or is it a case of little and often ?
Impressed you had your engine out ! oo er misses.
