My gearknob has suffered and was quite badly scratched on the nearside. So today I took it off, and the photo below shows the components:
From left to right - first the locking ring which drops over the naked stick first.
Then there's the plastic insert. This takes up the slack between the original stick, and the next item.....
Which is the locating collar.
So after inserting the plastic insert into the collar, unless it's a new one, make sure that the grubscrew holes line up, then slot over the stick. There are three allen headed grub screws which secure the collar to the stick. Once done, the locking ring can be screwed upwards over the hidden grub screws, then the knob can be screwed down. Use the locking ring to get the right position I used a blob of locktite here and here to keep it tight.
The knob is anodised (by the look) - so I resigned myself to taking all the coating off to get rid of the scratches. You can't wetndry scratches from coated aluminium, as the wetndry takes the coating off and makes a mess. So I dremelled it, then 400 grit, 600 grit, and 1200 grit, finished off with autosol and it looks much better!

That looks rather good!

I also very much appreciate the instructions, I'd been wondering how it came off.
Aldermog was previously owned by Jayne Jones and she wears multiple rings on her left hand: the result is that the top of the gear knob is lots of scratches.

Does anyone offer a nice wooden replacement?

It was only when mine fell off on the 4/4 that I discovered how it was fitted! Also discovered that it's made by Richbrook. I replaced it with one of their slimmer models, the same style as the Roadster Gear Knob sold in the factory shop. I'll do the same on my current car at some stage as I think the standard knob is too bulky and I'm not keen on the alloy finish.

Peter.....aren't Jayne's scratches part of the cars history? wink

I'll mount it as a paperweight!

Given the limited space between the top of the gear lever and the underside of the dash I think it may be difficult to fit some of them. But the collection on their web site is nice. I'd rather like a black leather one.

I think they also supply the Morgan alloy tax disc holder.

Peter, I was chatting to Henry and Nick at Williams yesterday about improvements and the gear knob issue came up. They are fans of the slim "Roadster" style as well. I did say that they should get a nice wooden one made up and manufacture a shorter slimmer gear lever as well. In the meantime I've ordered one from Richbrook.
