But from the way the Hamster treats (correction - trashes!) cars, you can count on 1700 hard miles! That's more than 2.1/2 times more (1700 trashed miles=4200 sensibly-driven miles) in the hands of an enthusiast. That car had a hard time early in its life and a few prangs to boot...

I often wondered what condition the Hamster's Max is in on careful inspection: I nurtured mine from new; and now, it's really happy... ...and so am I!

I had a close look at this car in Jan 2011 before I found my Speed Silver one. The well-documented front end damage repair wasn't evident from what I could see (no filler, overspray, new fixings etc) and the dealer told me that it had been back to the factory for at least one new wing and the front valence panel. Chassis legs apparently hadn't been impacted. It also drove very nicely.

For other reasons, it wasn't the car for me. I do recall water damage to the distressed effect leather interior, esp on the passenger side sill cover and door card. It looked as if it had been cleaned with a pressure lance and water had got in spectacularly between the door and sill. Not a good idea with Morgan panel gaps!!

That's worrying indeed! Have you detected anything else which carries the same degree of concern?

If I'm going to pay that asking price, I would like to know a few more details about the car. It's not an everyday car like a Ford Mondeo or Toyota Corolla where one could expect just average condition and a pre-owned price: it's a supercar with a high price tag....!

Hammonds car is one of the few which is widely known to have been crashed and repaired (twice). There is no doubt the factory put it all back together as good as new, but the low price paid for it to take it to Oz no doubt reflected that history.

Like others, I believe that this car was responsible for the market assuming maxes should retail under 100k. I'm sure prices are recovering a little as we come into this year and financial confidence returns to the market. We shall see.

I want to keep mine forever, but asI realise that I will drive it very little over the next 18 years until my kids grow up I do ponder whether I flip it and get a Ferrari FF that is less beautiful, and will undoubtedly depreciate, but will be usable every weekend...

If it is any help my almost new Coupe still lets water in around the lower front edge of the door. It is one of the things that will need to be addressed next time the car goes back to the factory.

If you put your hand at the lower front corner (by the speaker) you can feel a good draught.

I'm far from an expert, but I found nothing to concern me. The water damage looked fixable, albeit getting a colour match on distressed leather could be a challenge. It may have been a similar leak to Alistair's car, but I suspect not since the water had deflected upwards from the sill to get on the door card. Maybe this was fixed when it transferred ownership?

I would have bought it, but since I wanted to use the 'Max for touring, i eventually found one with an auto box and rear pipes which gives a relaxed if cruisey drive. I remember Hammond's car having a very eager front end and feeling much livelier than mine, but then that may just be because it was the first I'd driven and didn't know what to expect. As I said earlier I liked the way it drove!
