Sorry Peter.

I just love the "Hansom" cab compartment, quite a machine.

Looking at it, I assume that the engine is mounted on the front wheel, but, they so nearly got it right, if only they had made the thing drive the other way with a rear driven single wheel and the two wheels at the front to steer by.

Dear all,

The nice chaps at Hammerhead engineering have been very helpful and some cardboard aided design over the christmas period showed that fitting an unmodified unit behind the cylinders would cause issues for the fuel pipes/wiring going up to the engine. (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h1xdl01r7keyzde/doffOTPRI8)

At risk i ordered one anyway and my "Jugs" are now fitted.

Not a job for the faint hearted as it does require the bracket to be separated and the wiring to be extended. Complete dismantling of the assemblies was needed. But i think it looks a lot neater than my initial impressions the factory cooling option as it avoids the huge vac formed cowling (not that i've seen one up close and personal). Once fitted they still leave the top of the engine alone, which i think is part of the aesthetics of the car.

Can be done with a hacksaw and a bastard file, I resorted to milling through then tidying up with the file (using M12 washers on either side as a filing guide) as i was feeling lazy.

I have uploaded some photos of the process to here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/c9scustfwhd1ktg/WzAd7H5zr7

I used an M12 washer as the template for the cutting of the ends as shown in the pictures. The brackets are fitted to the existing M12 set screw that fixes the ends of the chassis strengthener. It has a Nylock nut and you can just get to the nut to hold it whilst doing it up with a hex wrench at the other end.

I rewired the fans using the original connector to the fans internally making the switches redundant (i positioned these underneath). The routing of the wires out of the original exit holes in the bracket (as i have done) is not ideal as they do get closer than i would like to the RH barrel. Perhaps a better routing would be to remove the switch, fit a grommet and take the wires through the switch hole; Maybe in the summer.... Mk2 wiring.

I have a thermal gun in the loft but i think it will need to be warmer weather before i can get some meaningful results on the effect on cooling, or i'll have to leave it idling for half an hour or so frown. However if the fans work to cool a Harley, then they should work as positioned on the S&S as it is very similar to their position when on a Harley.

My main worry was the temperature of the fans when not switched on (as they are mounted behind the cylinders).

So I went for a run today (6-8 degrees celsius); when i got back i immediately felt the front surface of the fans and they were hardly warm. I will probably get some temperature strips and insulate them from the air on the front surface to satisfy myself that the fans are not cooking in the longer term.

So, ready for a steaming hot summer then smile
