Has anyone considered/used a Waterless Coolant in this model? I am considering the change as the benefits look impressive.

Some say it's a waste of time and expensive, others think it is great.

i use it in an 1990 +8 ,because , as evribody nows, the coolsystem for that type of car , can better.
In high performance motorcycle bikes, it is used since last 10 year (or longer )and in those engines you need it,...... it works.

Hi Ken.
I used to have a problem with my plus 8 overheating and boiling up, when I got stuck in traffic. Therefore losing usually quite a lot of coolant. This was a worry especially if was with me, as she would usually give me an ear bashing.
I did a bit of research at the beginning of last year and spoke to various people about the problem. It was recommended that I fit a Mulfab Ally Radiator and a 14" fan, which I did. As the radiator was quite an expensive item I also decided to use Evans Waterless Coolant to protect it and the cooling system from further corrosion, coupled with the high boiling point of Evans coolant.
The result has been really good as the engine now runs at a steady 90 / 95 deg C even when I am stuck in heavy traffic.
Last year I drove down to Lemans 24hr race and got stuck in heavy traffic in 30 deg of sunshine. The Mog held the normal running temp at all times, I have never had to top up the coolant since.
I now have more confidence to go any where.

I have a feeling that won't be the last time that this topic is aired. I also run a +8 which used to be marginal on cooling.

The most effective way of cooling the engine is to use a good quality alloy radiator , particularly one that is deeper than standard. This will certainly work.

Secondly try installing an oil cooler kit, this will cool the oil, and therefore let the radiator be more efficient in cooling the water. This will help.

Make sure that the oil level is full to the top mark, this is an extension of the above.

Also make sure that all the hoses are in good condition and not leaking.

Lastly don't believe the figures on the gauge, it is a difference that you are looking for, not an absolute number.

The fluid in the cooling system will have much less effect on cooling the engine than any of the above measures.

The only real benefit in using the usual "waterless coolants" is that they are less toxic than usual diluted monoethylene glycol (MEG) based fluids, since they are normally based on Monopropylene Glycol (MPG)

MEG has better heat transfer properties than MPG, MPG is more viscous than MEG so the water pump will have to work harder.

So if you really believe the benefits claimed by the publicity for these coolants , then please go ahead and use them , but don't be surprised if they don't solve overheating issues.

As you can read above, others have a different opinion. Mine reasoning is based on science , not practical experience, as I am not going to waste my money on them.

I've heard one drawback with using waterless coolant is you will need to get every bit if water out if the system before using it and when out and about you can't top up easily unless you carry some. A burst hose or leak at the roadside no longer becomes a smile fix..

I would imagine it would cause a smile if you opted not to change to waterless.
