So (another thread I started about helmets usage), Maryland MVA is saying the M3W isn't legal in the state in any form. They had the dealer bring them one two years ago and after inspection began they had concerns about brakes, tires, lighting and glazing and suspended any further inspection! I'm about to spend 50K on a lawn ornament?
Any other states denying them to anybody's knowledge?

The only issues I heard about registration on a M3W or Polaris Slingshot is from Texas, Connecticut and a couple other east coast states that do not know how to classify them.
I know in Texas you have to have a saddle that you straddle and handlebars. So even though it has three wheels, it has seats you sit in and steering wheel. I believe that a "few" M3W's got through in Texas, but when the Slingshot hit big last summer, they clamped down and refused to plate them.
I'm sure that Polaris has or is working on getting them approved.
If they are motorcycles, then all the "car" requirements go out the door and they may not be so picky on the brakes, tires etc.
Good luck with your purchase and now is the time to be getting it sorted out. I'm sure the dealer you purchased from knew you were a resident of Maryland and that there may be issues. I would throw this back in his lap for some assistance.

I read (either on this forum or the Slingshot forum) that North Carolina has recently passed legislation attempting to define and classify "auto-cycle" type vehicles which requires airbags on three wheelers that do not have saddle style seating. This appears to be aimed primarily at the Slingshot and the Elio...

Perhaps you can get the specs for the Australian Version and let them see if they will licence that?

One of the issues for Maryland seems to be that when motorcycles have two headlights they must be within 8" of each other!

Guns however are much safer so you can have one of those!! Let's make a deal, OK? we Yanks won't talk about the Royals if you don't talk about our gun laws. I think federal law takes precedence over state laws in these matters, Ken. So, if the 3 is legal for sale here in the States, then the State of your primary residence must register it, they legally cannot refuse to register something certified through the process of federalization. The 3 is federally approved for sale here as a motorcycle. The DMV and your dealer...surely they've sold and registered them in Maryland?..should help. Knowing how DMV's operate, it's good you're starting the inquiries now.

Pretty sure the state, unfortunately, has the right to allow ( or not) which vehicles they choose. Isn't that how California has always bad stiffer than Federal emissions standards? Isn't it how they're able to require manufacturers to sell a certain percentage of lower emissions vehicles?
