Someone has recently had their throttle stick wide open - I thought I'd read it on here, but it may have been Mogtalk. The organ pedal had stuck down. Luckily no damage was done as the driver was able to switch the ignition off. There was also a reference to the cable on another Mog showing a broken strand. This is the arrangement on the Series 1: There are several pivots, and two main "throttles" protected by coiled 'hairsprings' - just visible here. So plenty to oil. At the bottom edge of this photo you can see an unused ball attachment where a return spring could be located. I'm giving this some thought, as I don't want to make the throttle heavy, but have a couple of return springs in stock............. And this is full throttle........ Not obvious on the photos, but the cable moves upwards at full throttle relative to the outer cable, so the cable abrades on the top edge of the outer. So put some light grease here To get oil down the cable, make up a small funnel from foil. In this case it's from a posh wine bottle....... Hold the cable down where it passes the engine - so that the oil can flow down - the gradient is the wrong way here! And finally you may recall that I added a 'P' clip because my throttle cable was rubbing on the steering column. Here's a reminder.......... Just below that UJ under the wing is a metal box. I'd already grommeted the shaft on the front edge, but I'm now trying a neoprene lid, because it's open topped. This is two ply to get the right thickness, and is a push fit. That's all for now.......

Dave I have noted your comments and got my oiler out. Also note the spare wheel insert has had it's first coat of crimson. Should be fitted for a few blasts next week.

Excellent news Dave. I trust it's a perfect fit with neoprene keepers??

Hi Dave, Great solutions again Dave. 5 star! Regarding the cable lubrication, is hot melted grease not a better bet to pour into the cable (with great care of course) - I used to lubricate my motor bike chains using a bath of same for better infusion (was going to say 'penetration', but it sounds wrong somehow). I suppose there is a risk that the grease may solidify before it runs down the cable as far as oil would.

It's a conundrum Frank........... The best way to lube a cable is with it hanging vertically. But that takes effort. As it is, the cable follows a 'C'shape where each end is at the wrong end of a slope. So fitted on the car, the only place to get lube in, is the engine end. I would imagine the cable is nylon lined, so it should self lube, but mine was polished shiny on the top edge where it rubs on full throttle. Erm.... not that I use full throttle Yer Honour. So my main concern is to provide extra lube at that spot, and I figured that LM grease smeared into the cable will help. If a strand brakes there, it could easily stick on full throttle, which might just be too exciting for the good of yer trousers. I might test an extra return spring, but it needs a small bracket for the 'securing to the manifiold' end, so that will have to wait. It may make the throttle too heavy and that could be tiresome on a long journey.

I ran extra springs on my Spitfire 1500 (required for racing, not that I raced it) because I could never get the throttle shaft between the two carbs to fully return on both carbs simultaneously - no matter how careful the alignment. May have been weak standard springs, but I think it was just age (the car's ). Didn't notice any problem with throttle being too heavy, but the additional springs were not particularly strong. The failing throttle cable was on MT DAve - from the sound of it he might have other protential problems coming if none of the garages lubed that cable - what else did they not do? Cheers,

Thats why a FSH should be treated with caution Graham. But Dealers put a lot of emphasis on FSH........ At least my Roadster service history is well documented on here. Not that I intend to sell it.............

Hi Dave,
I take a photo in a new thread of the Cable Mass on the new roadster for you to give me an opinion on. A massive connector flops around and lies on the rocker box at the front. I cannot see where to secure them at the mo.

And here is the Roadster 100 equivalent for comparison. The cable, at the right, sweeps nicely down to the bulkhead in a gentle curve.

Guys, Castrol make an aerosol of "Chain Grease" it has a tube attachment to it's push button so you can spray the stuff down the outer - it will run for a bit before it semi solidifies. Should do the job you want
Cheers!
