Hi All,
I need to remove all 4 wheels (5 including the spare) from the Roadster to be sent away to be powder coated. I have seen some posts on jacking up the whole car but having just had an experiment with axle stands at one end I am a bit nervous to say the least to try both ends. I see on the instructions to the stands that they are not to be used in 4's anyway.
I have sawn up a couple of sleepers and intend to use these as blocks instead in all 4 locations but I have some questions (following some dubious glances from wife and daughter) as to whether anyone a) thinks this is a good idea and better than the stands, b) whereabouts to place the blocks front and rear, and c) the correct sequence to carry out the operation.
Also, and finally, would anyone suggest using a wooden tool for removal of the two eared spinners?
All comments / ideas most welcome.
Many Thanks
G idea

I have used 4 axle stands on many occasions, never had a problem. Just make sure the surface you are jacking on is smooth enough to allow the trolley jack to roll as it does the second lift.

No problem in using 2 matched pairs of axle stands so everything is at the same height.

I place the front stands on the lower tubes of the cross head and the rear stands where the rear cross member meets the chassis rails.

I have two pairs of Sealey Yankee 3 ton stands which are just wide enough to fit round the chassis rails and have a half moon cut away to fit snugly round the lower crosshead tubes.

Hope this helps

I agree with the two posts above

I know that axle stand manufacturers say not to use 4 because of health and safety but I know many people who use 4 axle stands regularly and as far as i know as long as you are methodical and make sensible precautions then it is fine

The only things to make sure of are;

All the same height or adjusted to the point where the car is level

flat smooth surface for the trolley jack to slide and adjust as its raising

The rear of the Morgan chassis crossmember is flat of course where you put the axle stands so I would suggest a wood block on the top which will bite into the 'U' of the top of the stand stand and provide a flat surface

This just stops any risk of slippage

On the question of the wood tool for removing spinners

I have used a wooden block and a metal ended hammer to hit spinners off. The wooden block just helps prevent any damage to the ear.

I now have a mallet that has the leather one side and copper the other - it makes a dent in the leather end but you can buy replacements

I know a few Morgan owners that swear by that rubber mallet that has the metal ball bearings inside to give extra hitting power.

another tip is to loosen the spinners a bit first before you jack up, that way if one is really, really tight - you are not having to clonk it (technical term) mega hard with it up on 4 axle stands

Hi,
Check out this tool for removing spinners.
https://www.oldtimertools.de/Vehicle-Typ...gan-BMH-42.html
It is expensive but it works very well with a long breaker bar and much more convenient if you have to remove a spinner at the roadside. Also it is a much less daunting prospect to remove a spinner with this, I knew I was bound to hit the wheel arch sooner or later.

nifty

As you said, with a long handled breaker bar for leverage it looks like it could work well

I used to have a spinner "spanner" from the MG club. Worked really well but the long handle was close to the wing/wheelerch edge.
I sold it through TM when moving to the plus8 with 5 nut alloys.
As for 4 point axle stand support....no problem if your trolley jack rolls properly and the stands are in the right places.
Most kitcar builders use 4 axle stands to build. Some use tressle stands as an alternative.
You could always raise the car in stages. Front/back a bit at a time alternately. That will reduce the large movements. A bit tedious going back and fore but no big deal.
How high? Depends on whether you intend getting under the car to do work etc.

My Plus 4 rebuild project is currently perched on 4 adjustable axle stands. 3/4 extended they bring everything to a nice working height!
