In response to requests for pics of the Peter Mulberry Roadster Sump conversion here are some of my feeble pics. taken from under the car. I believe that this is the first one on the latest sump (Dave W's research indicates that they are all similar in this respect though) The Tail end Pic. was taken with the lens set 3cm from the drive's surface indicates that the Chassis and Sump Guard are now the lowest parts now. (phew) You will notice that I have also had a Sump Guard Fitted (Aero 8 Conversion apparently)in an attempt to allay fears and give SWMBO more confidence. This looks quite easy to make in 4mm Alloy Sheet for those of you with the skills and tools and IMHO would have gone a long way to helping prevent damage to our no-converted sump. IMHO it should be a standard fitting for Roadsters. Side View showing the milled away waffle and replacement plate with re located Drain Plug. A Closer shot of the Welding and the tail of the Sump Guard which is ahead of the Sump so no fouling. Tail End Shot showing the Gearbox cross member and the Sump guard. Sump Guard looking towards the Sump from offside front. Sump Guard looking from Nearside front. With all three engine mountings, the Brake Master Cylinder and a Brake warning lamp switch replaced we are just hoping that there is no other hidden damage. I noticed yesterday that the offside front cat mounting rubber is under slight angular stress (maybe bent bracket)- all achieved by hitting an immovable object at around 5mph. Being a dealership repair, none of this came cheap but is outside of my ability anyway and the warranty is only 6 months in.

Interesting pictures Frank. It's a shame that we don't have a contact in the aluminium casting business, because if money was no object, we could have a new shallower sump cast, using the top couple of inches of the original casting as a pattern. It would be necessary to extent the deep section further forward to retain capacity and to increase the length of the baffle plate, so not a cheap operation. There are foundrys on the web who will do low volume products, but I bet the tooling costs are eye watering. Anyway, I'm still looking into sumps............

My father, bless him, was a foundry man and a school mates father was the Pattern Maker there. The Patterns (tooling) were made of a small smooth grain hardwood, so a good carpenter needed. - Not looking to damage the 'Mulfab' business, how about a Project for a Tech School or College near by you Dave?.

Yes, what about a small serie of modified sumps for the V6ers?
For those who have already touched And for those who wonder when they will...
1st, we have to know how many of us would be interested

The biggest problem would be the design and pattern making, and if we were to use a Mulfab sump as a pattern, we may as well just use a Mulfab sump. If Ford bang the standard sump out at £220 plus, when they've made thousands, I reckon that the cost of a recast would put most people off. There are foundry's out there that will do a one off, but it still needs a pattern.

I have a friend, pattern maker by trade who has a prototype/small batch engineering co. he has done stuff for Austin Healey AH Spares and has cad/cam facility - I can sound him out but initial tooling costs are often a stumbling block.
Franks mods look just the job but when I bashed my sump in Bourges a couple of weeks back it was the back end that took the whack, a hidden drop of 4" when cobbles ended and asphalt started caught me out, later inspection of the Mog Trap on foot revealed multiple gouges.

That's a good start Easter. It's a complex casting, but at least we're not starting from a blank sheet of paper.

Maybe the Noble dry sump is an option? For Plus 4 owners, Raceline has an alternative sump. Harald

Frank, looking at the pics I would say the dry sump is the only route to having good clearance.
