Hi,
I would like to keep a copy of the fiel filler cap key in the car.
I thought it would have been pretty easy to find a "blank one" and having that cut.
Three different (big) places in Italy did not have the blank key.
Does anybody of you where could I find it?
I do not really care about the MOG logo or the shape.
It has simply to work.
Any suggestion/idea, more than welcome.

We discussed this (much) earlier and I recall that most recent Morgan fuel caps are 044.

Not that this helps source another!

I am usually good in googling but with TM posts it's pretty difficult, for me. If you could point me to the other thread happy to go on there.
Meanwhile, is 044 a "brand"?

This is all I could find on a Google - https://www.htsspares.com/catalogue/plant/plant-accessories/plant-keys/ignition-keys/show/hky0002

I am assuming the 044 is the basic blank profile of the key that you need to have copied.

Here is another link - maybe a photograph of your key to them would help - it is the 044 Series. They imply that the actual key number should be inscribed on the barrel of the lock facing you as you look at it.

The morgan owners are honest people so we do not steal the fuel between us, is not the case in the automotive luxury brand for which I work.

I'm happy to share my fuel from time to time, if I can get rid of the hassle of the key.
I fear that sooner or later that key/lock will cost me much more than a few liters of fuel.

All my FS keys (from first Land Rover on to latest LR and Morgan) were single sided.
That's not to say there weren't two sided FS keys.

Hi Everyone,

it looks like a key for a disc tumbler lock, not the most secure or complicated.

I'm sure 044 relates to the blank but it doesn't help if the manufacturer is unknown.

The important part is the profile of the keyway, look end on to see it's shape, they are all different. First stop is a visit to a key cutting shop and ask them if they have a blank to match the profile. The manufacturer is unimportant as long as it has the same shape. In Britain Timpsons shoe repairer, who these days do a fair amount of lock work, usually display a board of keyway profiles.

Then it is straight forward job to cut a key using the original as the pattern.

There is also a company www.fastkeys.co.uk who may help.

I have no connection but did spend a lifetime in the supply of locks etc for high end buildings but regrettably not cars. Sorry

Regards

Every Morgan’s fuel cap key for some years now is number 044! so every owners key will open every other owners’ cap!
So, for once, the Factory and dealers should have one in stock! The factory were/are infamous for losing keys so the filler cap keys were standardised with key no 044.
Incidentally there is a big box of ‘spare’ lost/ recovered keys at the Factory, probably hundreds, many of them Rover plus 4 keys last time I saw them.

I have it already done it in three different ones.
This was why I was asking for different option (beside factory or dealer. I know for sure I can get them there, but I'd miss part of the pleasure).

Ciao Peter, your help is much appreciated.
Let me make a final check next week end (I owe a couple of pics to Alistair as well) and maybe I will bother you for that, only if it's not too much hassle.
Many thanks!

A little late I know but tracking down a spare Morgan fuel cap key blank is a bit of a challenge. Endless Googling keeps bringing up this thread and not much else.
Thought it worth posting the links below to this key I stumbled across.

Thanks Rog! Now I had a copy done by my dealer, but those links and pics are super helpful!

I re-engineered my fuel cap so that it can be opened with the ignition key. By luck the "cut" of the the first part of my ignotion key was very similar to the fuel cap key and both will work. I just had to open the keyway a little and adjust the lock wafers a little. I usually use the original because the lock is quite stiff and the longer ignition key could be damaged however in an emergency, such as the loss of the fuel cap key (or leaving it at the B&B pantsdown) I can use the ignition key.

To be honest it is ridiculous that with the number of cars produced Morgan don't have custom made lock sets so that one key works in the ignition, doors, and fuel cap. Moto Guzzi have done it for ignition, fuel, side bags and top case so I would think Morgan should be able to do the same.

I doubt that there is any car with such a key shaft and a super-small fuel cap like the AeroSS to "reuse" smile

Ale. The keys are made by Newton Equipment Ltd.

When I modified my fuel cap to accept the ignition key I ordered a spare cap from the manufacturer just in case of a disaster.

I have some spare keys so if you send me a PM or SMS me with your address I will pop one in the mail for you.

Ciao Peter, many thanks!
Some time ago Gigi provided me with an additional key.
I will keep in mind your offer and pick up a key if we succeed to meet once between Milan and Como.
Many thanks for now!

I got a spare key for my Aero8 fuel cap following the link posted by Rog.

Sadly this does not work for me (S1 Aero8 fitting must be different?).

If anyone wants a spare '044' key then drop me a PM with your details and I'll post it to you FOC!

First come and all that......

If I recall my Aero fuel key is quite a lot smaller looking than the picture of the 044 keys, it also has a flat edge - so looks like the S1's are different.

I would love to make all the keys the same, i.e. ignition working for doors and fuel..

Sorry to hear that James

Have you tried giving the freshly cut key a good brush over with a small wire brush to take the burrs off? Sometimes that helps.

My second key arrived today. Ordered another as I have 3 ignition keys. Below is a pic of my “Newton Equipment” part number Z45LT cap. Perhaps other cars may have different caps I guess.
