I baulked at the price charged by the dealers for the center consoles and so I looked for an alternative solution. This may be helpful to owners who have a black interior and don't have the skill or time to make their own like Cooperman. Sourced from Ebay…£20 delivered in black vynal ,,,flip top lid with inner storage..easy to adapt for fitment over the transmission tunnel.

Eeee this takes me back to 1970..............
For the 997cc Anglia 105E, which had a painted metal dash, you could buy a padded black plastic adhesive trim........... The 1200cc Anglia came with a Ford equivalent..........
But then in my first (of four) MG Midgets, the previous owner had installed a home made console under the dash, which contained an 8 track player, and a cubby hole. It was made of wood, but no ply, the flat sections were hardboard. Oddly it was covered in green leather. The interior was black and at that time the seats were still leather.
That inspired me and one of my very first DIY jobs was a console/armrest to fit between the seats with a padded top, and covered in leathercloth plastic........ In the front I fitted a new 8 track player which sloped down into the body of the console, and under the lid was space for a few 8 tracks...............
Such a console for my Morgan has been on my to do list for a long time. In fact somebody posted plans on here a few years ago. I would use 3mm std neoprene to pad the sides under the leather. Ebay is full of leather off-cuts, so being black, I'll get some easily.
The challenge I found with the Midget consoles was the armrest. Plastic leathercloth doesn't mould round corners easily. Now I can work with leather it should be a bit easier.
A good effort Jon. It looks amazing. You could sell the basic wooden frame for a diy finish.......... Trouble is, like the stuff I mess around with, it takes to long to be worthwhile!!

Using Gliptone you can colour match it to your trim, blends in very well and does not peel off. Mine is Stone over black, just 2 coats, the grain is still visible.

Yes, lovely looking project Jon and will have inspired many others to do the same over winter I am sure. Would be interested to find a good source of coloured leather for such an application. Does the 'stepped' side detail support the floor of the box? Rob, yes the stepped side supports the box floor, which sits on the propshaft tunnel, it also allows the seatbelt buckles to sit under the 'step' and give a slightly wider storage compartment Made some paper patterns, to work out where to fold, lap & join before risking expensive leather mistakes

If you can’t match the colour leather, you can always paint it
