Steering dampers have been around for a long time, and can be used on Morgan with steering boxes to reduce wobble.
A steering damper can also be fitted to Morgans with a steering rack to improve feel. This came about because my Roadster with Mulfab bearings has very light steering, almost nervous. In conversation with Keith at BHM, he recommended adding a steering damper and said that it improves the feel. My Roadster has never suffered wobble, so I guess I've been lucky.
The rack attachment uses a replacement centre bracket. Here's the original.
This is the replacement.
First I removed the trackrods. The fasteners are 19mm with locking tabs. Nyloc nuts to the rear.
The next image shows the damper test fitted. I later discovered that the Allen bolt has to go through from the front, which meant that I had to part dismantle this to get it in place.
Here's the problem......there is insufficient clearance through the over-rider bracket. The over-rider bracket was introduced in 2002, and changed in '2006' when the angle of the track rods changed. So there may be enough clearance on the later brackets.
But these brackets are 2005, and were opened up by the dealer when later stub axles were fitted by the first owner.
So the bracket had to come off, for modification, which means splitting the track rod end. This is before.......
After, and a clean. I used a hacksaw for the two vertical cuts, and drilled holes across the bottom, before filing it flat. This was quite intensive as this metal is hard.
It's quite fiddly replacing this bracket.
This is the other end with the U bolt bracket which locates on the lower cross tube. Clearance through the over-rider bracket is good. The damper doesn't move vertically with the suspension..... both ends are effectively fixed to the chassis.........
