Hi folks

Me and Treacle are getting excited about or first trip out in the Mog when we get her home and thoughts have turned to luggage.

We quite like the look of these, and they match the car colour of black and crome or mulberry.

Securing them wouldn't be an issue and they seem to me to be quite robust. I can make a weatherproof cover for them if needed too.

I suspect most people use softer bags etc but I really like the look of these.Any pitfalls with hard luggage ?

Looks good to me

A rigid case looks better than a soft case on the back of a Mog in my opinion

I had the black leather Morgan case for my last Mog which when I packed it full for a holiday, hurt my back lifting it

So a nice light weight case is definitely good

I agree that the Morgan leather cases are unreasonably heavy. Ours now sits on a shelf in the garage.

Our solution is an enormous Brics Bellagio. Not withstanding the excess volume swmbo still manages to fill it up, if not with excess clothing that comes home still clean then with shopping purchased on the trip banghead

Here it is rigged for wet weather with the optional cover. The zip is almost completely concealed and even without the cover is shower proof. With the cover we have never had a drop of water enter the case.

Damned expensive but light, strong, and very nice. I did consider getting 2 smaller trolleys and putting them side by side on the luggage rack (a his-and-hers solution) but that would have been quite costly even though, in the end, it would still be my preferred option.

They look good.

It's also well worth looking at the Hillsalive fitted luggage for the space behind the seats. they are excellent and remarkably capacious. (search this forum for info on these).

I totally agree with Gambalunga.

If you are looking for something with a classic look, I can also recommend the Brics trolleys.

I have the 27" trolley. Although it is rainproof, I use a rain cover for safety when it rains. So far everything has always stayed dry.

For long journeys we put a drybag on top of it (we have a dog with us and the space behind the seats as storage space is largely omitted):

Paul F has a good solution, especially as you can share the carrying. Photos will arrive soon I expect. Here's my solution, I have to allow for bulk luggage

I use Givi panniers. Click into place, waterproof and locked on.

Since this picture was taken, I have bought a lowline luggage rack which sits the cases 6” lower.

apologies as not much use for a Trad. , but this was the official Morgan solution for the Series 1 ,Aero 8 -

They are fitted to the boot shape, canvas and brown leather and very well made (in Italy).

Stupidly expensive originally, but we picked them up from the Morgan stall at the three Counties show ground at a more reasonable price thumbs

Cheers paul. One thing that concerned me was view through the mirror with a case with depth..

Another question

Do any of you use a removable brake light and stick it on the luggage ?

My car has a cobra head light which I think is very useful given the low line of the other lights ! With a case this would then be obscured

Here's my solution. The case cost A$35.00 from a second hand store and the version 2 strap on light I made for less than A$20.00....

Hmmm...

I'm ashamed to show a picture!

Let me say: On longer trips in Norway etc. we use a 140L aluminum box (for the very light travel baggage like Fleece bankets etc.) oops

I used to - when we used a large case on the rack. The panniers do not obscure the high level brake light - there is a gap between them.

There is a plug and socket near the base of the cobra lamp. If you buy the right connectors (off eBay) you can make up a “Y” cable so that the extra light plugs in to the system with no permanent modifications to your car wiring.

One other solution I have seen is to mount a brake light on the luggage rack at the rear of the car. With some racks this is high enough and no need for a removable lamp.

Mossman can make trunks to your sizes: Mossman Trunks

We have been using ours as a case but it can get very heavy, so I'm thinking of using soft bags within it and bolting it to the rack when we are touring.

I use an LED strip which I velcro to the trunk or to straps on the spare wheel when that is fitted. It's a 4/4 sport so the spare wheel obscures the built in high level light.

For long leather straps look on eBay

For luggage straps, I bought a couple of leather belts from Big Men Online (http://www.bigmenonline.co.uk/belts-c102x1648883 ) that cost me a total of £36.00, which is a huge saving on the Morgan ones. They’ve performed excellently and look the part, too.

A neat solution for the high level brake light (HLBL)...

Is probably safer, but is a HLBL actually legally required? Older Morgans obviously do not have one?

Now THAT I like a lot. In particular the Morgan badge. When the time comes for some luggage I think I’ll trawl Fleabay for a suitable case and do similar.

As someone has alluded to above, watch the height of some of the hard cases/trunks affecting visibility when the hood is up! (I know, I know....wimp!) Good door mirrors a must.

The light is plumbed from its fixed position through the case to a connector then into the brake light harness. The case comes off light and all in this version. I have made up a heavy clear plastic cover for the whole unit for weather protection. The second version is more functional as it can be attached to any form or shape of luggage.

Smaller extra luggage can be fitted behind the passengers seat. Luckily, the other half doesn't mind given she can pack more......

If you want to go very Retro grab one of these from your local second hand store. Let your imagination go wild with the travel tags from EBay....

I don't know, I haven't used it yet.
The previous owner must have used it, I think.
I'm wondering I ever will? thinking If I do, I think they 'll stop me at border control to look for stoweaways.

I prefer a waterproof soft bag & Hills alive cases behind the seats. We did a 3 week trip to Sorrento & back with that set up.

The big advantage is it doesn't block the third brake light & rearwards vision is not impaired.

Hi John
What make is your soft bag and how do you secure it to the mog? Is it waterproof? Do you have to remove it every time you leave the car parked eg logo breaks on longer journeys/shopping in town?
Sorry to ask so many questions but as we are taking delivery soon and have some trips booked thought I'd try and get ahead of the game a bit.
Thanks in advance

We hold it onto the rack with surfboard straps that lock from Kanulock.
https://www.surfsurfsurf.co.uk/roof-rack...WBoCh38QAvD_BwE

The bag came from here
https://www.boot-bag.com/morgan.htm

We went through several wet days including a thunderstorm in Naples that had standing water up to the running boards & all stayed dry in the bag.

I also fitted a stainless eye bolt to the rear passenger floor & have a stainless steel rope with soft eyes on it so I can padlock the Hills alive cases to the car when on the back shelf.

I think the spec on the rack in 25kg.
It can alter the handling if you have a heavy load at the back.

Hi ,

Well it's not really aerodynamic but it is British made, absolutely vintage, I made it watertight, added removable tea cart wheels and it does take a lot of pairs of shoes. happy3

Peter,
On the eastern boundary of my farm at Wingham on the New South Wales mid north coast about 4 hours drive north from Sydney.

It's the spot I call the "grave yard garden" where all the left over odds and sods from the main garden are planted.
The Manning river winds through the bush land in the background. this photo was taken the day before I took off on a 6 week tour of Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia with members of the West Australian Morgan car club.

I like Rimowa as well, but what do you do to get them waterproof? I tried an additional sealing, but it did not work well enough.

Before our boot bag we put everything in bin liners inside our hard case. That works.

Except my giant alubox for larger travels in norway I use an old Delsey suitcase with a waterproof cover I let made some years ago.

I hope the picture is shown direct!
No! I can't manage it! frown

I have designed these bespoke "weekenders", adjusted to the space behind the seats. They don't fill the space fully in the height, so having still some place for jackets etc. The measures are 50cm(L) x 30cm(W) x 25cm(H). I have found an old craftsmen, who had the materials and skills to make the bags as I wanted. He even still could make the "leather-reliefing" (the Morgan logos). The bags are hand made of finest leather, inside lining of alcantara-fabric, 5 zipped pockets, removable belt for carying on shoulder.
We use them for weekend trips. For longer journeys, additionally a 40 years old industrial Rimowa aluminium tool suitcase serves.

I made a low-line luggage rack 30 years ago. If I carry a case its always wrapped in a ground sheet. Or it's a North Face roll bag behind the seats. Clothes in poly bags.
I did lose a case off the back in Italy back in 1986 after hitting a massive pothole at high speed. The truck behind ran over it. Lost everything.

Chaps,

What sort of size, roughly (ltr) holdall can be placed behind each seat ? My seat will be pretty much as far back as it will go.

Thats what I was wondering too. I think I would prefer as much as I could behind the seats and not too big a lump on the rack !

The Hills alive cases are designed to fill the void, We still keep coats on top & a brolley under them.
swmbo can get 2 weeks of clothes in one, the case is then for warm weather coats & shoes.

I have used pallet wrap and a heat gun when having to use external. It costs about £10 for a decent roll. You could use the Rimowa for strength and then give it a quick wrap for weather proofing?

For anyone still looking for Morgan luggage and suitcases I can manufacture it all - to your colour spec as well. I have fitted luggage for behind the seats on trad Morgans and for the Aeros boots as well. I have also made sutcases for the luggage racks (I wanted one for my own Morgan) and these can be made in any size to suit, but they are usually 80cm long, by 45-50cm wide, but 18-20cm high - so this still allows good vision in the rear view mirror and for high-level brake lights.
see www.classictravellingluggage.com for all the details.

Large wheeled holdall bag. Got one with exactly same dimensions as the space behind seats. £25 on Amazon. All luggage out in a oner! I just don't like big lumps on the rack obscuring the rear view.

I use a Bootbag on the rack. A soft waterproof suitcase shaped bag with straps. It doesn’t sit as high on the rack as a suitcase so good rear view. Holdalls behind the seats for additional luggage ( unless we have the dog in there!). I sometimes put bin bags over the Bootbag as well for extra insurance.

I too go with the Bootbag on the rear rack of my +8 in which I put two soft holdall type bags doesn't block the upper light or rear view and is completely waterproof, easy to carry as one item. This set up plus the rear shelf space was enough for two of us during six weeks covering 8000 miles in absolutely all sorts of weather.

Graham and others have see my luggage bags. I wandered into MAKRO 20 years ago, picked up 2 Antler zip top sports bag with external pockets. They fit perfectly behind the seats and used them ever since.

Even when I had a Mogbox (wonderful thing for convenience) I carried one. When solo they can fit in the passenger footwell to balance the load around the car.

At £9.99 each or £15 a pair they were the best bargain I have ever had. There are some excellent solutions out there without paying a small fortune, each to their own of course but I do smile sometimes at the prices people pay for what is essentially a bag. 😂

I have to say that I’m with ‘Spanner Juggler’ on this one. We have two fairly large black leather bags that taper from about 1/2 way up and fasten with a full width zip across the top ......... They fit snuggly into the wedge-shape space behind the seats side-by-side, leaving room for odds & sods behind the seats and jackets, etc, on top, under the tonneau cover.

If we did need to load the luggage rack (🤷🏼‍♂️) I’d also go for a “soft” bag option.

You can fit 2 boot bags on a sport rack. I find it pretty impossible to carry anything worthwhile behind the seats. We we take a lot of shoes on holiday 👠

When Kevin restored what was his Morgan he made this fibreglass for it sprayed and internally trimmed to match the coachwork and trim, and does not block the rear view mirror, and has served us well for many years of touring Southern Europe and trips nearer to home.

When travelling on my own I usually use just a small 26l Peli Storm case on the rack and on eof those Morgan leather holdalls in the car. When I went to Classic Le Mans, I used a 80l Expedition bag to carry all my camping gear. They are supposedly completely watertight, but as it didn't rain the whole time I was there I can't vouch for this.

Yes. I have been known to take the lot on a Scottish trip. Passenger footwell also full. Mistake as there was a rather nice looking hitch hiker who wanted a lift around part of the loch just north of Glencoe village. Tend to limit kit now depending on destination (or take a car with a locking boot!). smile

Always had one camera to hand, frequently hidden under spare coat and other paraphernalia...

That's not a grubby old trench coat by any chance .

Nearest I have to one of those Owen, is an Ozzie made stockman's coat, RM Williams, purchased in Perth (WA) nigh on 30 years ago.
Today might be a good day to wear it! umbrella smile

Nice one Giles and Jon! laugh2

Anybody any experience / feedback on the bags sold by Morgan?

CHARLES - LARGE LEATHER HOLDALL EMBOSSED WITH MORGAN WINGS - MUD BROWN

Would need 2 nicely fitting ones for my roadster. As big as possible.

Thanks for your kind feedback

Ulf

I've got one of the earlier versions in tan leather, I'm not sure of the size but I think it's probably medium rather than large. I picked it up a few years ago when MMC were flogging them off cheap. I really like it but I'm not sure I'd be happy to pay a couple of hundred quid for it.

I have one of the Morgan holdalls in tan leather, excellent quality lined, somewhat expensive but really good quality.

They look like nice holdalls - I just wonder if they could have spent a couple of minutes in thinking of a better name for the colour - "Mud Brown" doesn't sound very attractive!

I only have one as I have fitted Hills Alive boxes, sadly no longer made. However two would easily fit.

Mud is the new name, they used to be called "Diarrhoea Brown". laugh2
