I notice recommendations to "Pry up the damper plate to allow for a freer flow under the plate" when I grease the front king-pins. Sounds simple, presumably a wheels-up exercise, but how on earth do you pry up this plate without knackering the whole unit?

I'm not convinced that this is necessary. If you grease with the front jacked you should see some traces of grease under the plate without 'prying'..........

There's a tiny drilling which feeds grease into the space between the stub axle and the damper blade bearing washer/plate. The issue I have is how to lift it without damaging the bearing face of the plate. To 'pry' means to insert a tool - pry bar or screwdriver in the gap and lever against the spring tension. If you damage the bearing plate it will probably stiffen the steering more than not prying. It's a difficult call, but with minimum tension on the spring with the weight off the wheels, some grease should get in. If you really want to pry, use a sharp edge like a chisel, and insert one each side. That's the best option other than not doing it!!!
The solution is Mulfab steering bearings.......

I have never pryed and I wouldn't for the reasons expressed by Dave.

Funnily enough, that has always been my concern, and I have tried various ways using a bottle jack to lift the sliding plate separately from the rest of the suspension, with very little success. But the idea of grease getting in via simply the standard drllings seems equally unlikely! Thanks anyway for comments

It does work - when I took mine apart it was lubricated reasonably well.

Quick question, you didn't pass a small group of Morgans as they headed SW away from Biggar in early June?
We saw a +8 heading towards town as we wended our way towards the M74 and points further west...
