Just thought I would quickly post this for the record….

Had this really annoying faint tinkling noise coming from the off side front suspension for a week or so. Couldn’t see anything obvious so decided to start pulling stuff apart today. Fortunately I didn’t have to do very much before finding it in the damper. The Bilstein has a large washer that seems to support the dust cover. The washer appears to be sat on a wire rod clip but somehow had fallen to the other side and was just rattling around on the damper shaft.

All sorted and silent again, at least for now woohoo

I wonder if a drop of Loctite would hold it in place ?

I think the hole in the washer was a bit generous. Maybe if it does it again I will slip a smaller better fitting washer underneath the larger one. I suspect the top fixing might had originally been a tad over torqued too loading it up.

That‘s german engineering. Take a cheap washer, which doesn‘t fit…

Change the construction for fitting a (also cheap) circlip - problem solved.

Main benefit: problems in future are in sight, so sell a new set of dampers.
