Hello out there! I have talked to a few owners of Roadsters here in Sweden about what type of exhaust system they use. Almost everybody I talked to told me that with the original system "the car sounds like a sewing machine". Is that the fact? Therefore they had changed to another system (Librands?) In my opinion a sportscar should sound like a sportscar but not louder than you can bare it or that people take offence. I have seen one car in Sweden with sidepipes and the sound was almost to heavy. Are there different systems for the Roadster available? And are there systems creating problems when going for the MOT? I will have big ears for your opinions. Regards, Ken in Sweden

Well - in my view the Roadster has a very satisfying burble - a fair bit of popping and banging on the overrun, and a decently throaty roar under acceleration, which becomes a howling banshee from about 4500 to 6000 or so revs (when she goes like a scalded cat !). I certainly would not want a louder system - I think it would get pretty tiring. It's true that the 3.0 V6 lacks the V8's off-beat character at low revs - especially at tickover. In fact occasionally I wonder if the motor's stalled at traffic lights: but it's all there when you put your foot down. I don't subscribe to the "hairdryer" put down (if that's what it is) myself: I'm glad to own a trad-bodied classic with the mechanical sophistication of modern machinery - but character a-plenty when you want it. Go louder by all means if you want to - I'm sure it'd be a riot - but keep the original exhaust handy, ready for when you get tired of the "boom" and want to revert to the well-matched standard spec. Hope this helps

in practice only the carburettor V8's have a great exhaust note, injection has muted the later models, on the way to the TM Xmas lunch last weekend mr_tony followed my Roadster (standard euro 5 pipes easily recognisable by the oval tailpipes) down the M 25 for a few miles and the first thing he said to me was " great sound "

Very briefly speaking, the sound of a Roadster with standard exhaust is no issue at all. It is very good indeed, robust, full bodied and balanced in it´s own way. I fully agree with Nick, don´t make changes out of the blue - Nick: "...keep the original exhaust handy, ready for when you get tired of the "boom" and want to revert to the well-matched standard spec..."
In my own experience the Roadster Sport makes quite enough boom (for me personally almost too much, so I let make some changes to silence the system between 2K and 3K rpm). On models with a spare wheel I never had to complain something - just good and car-fitting sound.
My 2 cent why the really good sound of a Roadster may not have the best reputation among some: That´s only because - in my view - the V8 sound of a carburettor Plus 8 is unbeatable. I was stunning when 15 years old listening to my "first" (only first seen) Plus 8 in 1974. That experience I will never forget. Under such circumstances it´s a bit a burdon for the V6 successor. (even if the late V8 had a more constricted sound).
But to sum up, the V6 has it´s own positive character.

Ken, I have had a librands system fitted to my roadster for 3 years and I do like it. Lots of character when accelerating and slowing down, but fine and unobtrusive in 5th on motorways. I spoke to Librands some months ago and they had upgraded the system since I bought in. Now you can get variations in db level plus accoustic trim tail pipes to change the sound level. You will enjoy the sound of a Roadster with a sports exhaust system until you meet up with a pre-cat plus 8. If you have not had this experience then avoid, it is like the forbidden fruit, you will want more.

My Roadster came with a sports system and on the second day of ownership I refitted the standard system. The sports system droned really loud at 70/75, and I couldn't stand it. As others have said, the standard system is just fine.

I Love the Growl of the Standard Roadster. At 4000 Miles now it is just starting to match the sound of our S Type Jag with similar engine. I refused a change to a Diesel Engined S Type Jag so that I could keep the famous 'Growl' as experienced with my original S type Sports. Dont waste money where perfection already exists. Three Cheers for the 'Growlers'

You should hear the rail version of a "Growler" - Class 37, English Electric V12, 1750 hp (note, no 'b' in front of that).
