Graham -- over here they just fill the pothole with a shovel full of tarmac - usually when it's wet so it comes straight out. If it happens to be dry, then it forms a bump(cause they never roll it) - After a couple of years, our local road has more bumps and holes than original road -- I call it our suspension test track!!!!!
Your roads certainly gave my GS's shocks a good pounding last week over in County Clare. There seems to be a habit of lulling one into a false sense of security with a smooth wide road surface then suddenly...bang....
