There seems to be a significant difference between the newer models with bearings on one hand and the older ones with washers on the other hand. Mine is of 2009 and has the newer "construction" and the steering is so light that I never missed an assist motor.
I have never driven an older model, but heard that the are quite hard to steer, especially when parking.
Therefore, for a new one I subscribe the "no power steering" list, for an older model I would try to get the bearings as retro-fit.
