I had mine done by Steve Simmonds, make it look much more finished and make no difference to the operation at all. A very worthwhile (cosmetic) improvement in my view. But then I also added walnut liners to the inside of the door pockets and chrome door lock covers, a walnut gear knob and a walnut (metal painted to look like walnut)steering column cover from Uncle Melvyn, just because I think they improve the look.
