The cutout on the rear panel of the later cars is quite large and a flared alloy casting fits onto it from the alloy tunnel cover so it would need a fair amount of axle displacement for the prop shaft to catch. The panel itself is cut using a template so unlikely that the cutout was incorrectly done.
I don't know what year Cats car is so of course the above may not be appropriate!
