In those days it was possible to order a car or bike in Europe, use it for one year, and import it into Australia tax and duty free. The difference in the cost was often enough to pay a good deal of the extended holiday expenses.
I can't remember when they made things more difficult but it was at about the time GST (VAT) was introduced instead of the previous wholesale tax.
