For those not familiar with the Vignette it can be purchased at the border post when entering Switzerland. Current cost is €34 or 40 Swiss francs and it is valid only for the current year. If you buy one in October it will still expire at the end of December, though they do give one month grace, so in effect at the end of January, and from December the 1st they issue Vignettes that are valid for December and the following year.

The trans-border tunnels are not covered by the Vignette and have their own tolls. These are:
Great Saint Bernard Tunnel (CH-IT)
Mont Blanc Tunnel (FR-IT)
Munt la Schera Tunnel (Livigno) (CH-IT)

The fine for not having one or having it incorrectly fixed is 200 Swiss francs and some police love to target foreign registered cars. More information at http://www.autobahnen.ch/index.php?lg=001&page=014
