My understanding from when I was CEO of a registered charity was that as long as my trustees "took all reasonable steps to ensure no wrong doing" there would be no liability. If someone within the organisation did something illegal it would be that person who would be liable to prosecution. There is a lot of scaremongering on the Internet and a lot of unscrupulous lawyers looking to make a fast buck.
