This problem was addressed in the early 1990s by David Rutherford who produced a strengthened version with a three bolt fixing and an extra location that is welded to the end of the axle.

I welded a tab on the axle ends and drilled and tapped the lower shock absorber mounting so that it could be removed without cutting of the weld.
