When running the alternator should be giving 13-14 volts regardless of the condition of the battery. If it is faulty your battery may not be fully charging. The battery standing battery voltage should be about 12.5 volts and should not drop below 10 volts when the starter is cranked. Try charging the battery up with a charger and see how it performs.
