it's done with no brake lights as the brakes are not applied....I do make hand signals, but I wonder how many motorists actually understand them. The "I am turning left" one is not particularly obvious.
Judging by the lights it always amazes me how many people drive on their brakes. Not much careful revs-matched engine braking anymore. And stationary at, say, traffic lights everyone constantly has their foot on the brake. I'm told that's the way they are taught to drive nowadays.
As for hand signals, we have a particularly vicious speed hump in a village near us. Approaching it the other day with a car close behind me I gave a clear slowing down hand signal - only to receive an angry blast from the horn. He completely misunderstood the courtesy I was offering and (I think) thought I was indicating for
him to slow down.
