i think there is no real benefit of the covering, maybe it is a tiny improvement of aerodynamics. But mainly for aesthetic purposes: i really hate it when the spare wheel is removed. Makes the car looks like as have been crashed or not finished yet. Ruins the overall aesthetics in my point of view.
