Everyone, thank you for your inputs. As a result I have decided to buy the Pacsafe Wrapsafe cable as suggested by StringersBestMate, as I believe this will be a more versatile solution should I need to secure more than one bag behind the seats at a later date.
I will run the cable through the seat frame rather than drilling a hole in the woodwork.
Now to finalise the spares and tools for the journey. Usually I only carry the tools supplied with the car. The other posts on this subject have been very useful.
Would be great to hear in due course where you stay and what the route is like etc as that sounds a great destination, brought much closer by the ferries to Santander etc.
