I suspect this could be a large minority, but as an engineering challenge it's closer to building a narrower aero chassis than it is to making the current Trad 'bedstead' chassis out of aluminium.

Steel and aluminium don't respond to dynamic load stresses in the same way. Aluminium will stretch with repeated loading even if the loads are well within the maximum load threshold. Steel will not stretch unless the applied load is over the yield threshold. The Aero aluminium chassis has to be massively over-engineered for the load forces it experiences since the goal is longevity.
