In Italy there's an automated toll payment called Telepass. It used to be reserved to the owners of an italian bank account, but I've heard that there are companies providing Telepass to foreign people. It's pretty useful because you can skip the queues for the toll payment, just need to take the correct yellow marked Telepass lane.
Another viable option is the use of the pre-paid pay-as-you-go card (Viacard): you can buy them at the motorway booths, or at the Punto-Blu shops and event at most tobacconist.
You should also be able to get a refund for the unused credit at the Punto Blu shops, but honestly I never tried this.
The third option is just to use any credit card, but I experienced occasional malfunctioning of the automated booths (the same used for viacards, but no problems with them)
