Was involved with a race bike engine that kept blowing neat little holes in its piston crowns...turned out that the particular brand of spark plug that was being used in it projected about 1mm further into the combustion chamber than the nominally equivalent spark plugs usually used by the engine builder. Doubling up the sealing washers on the plugs was all it took to end a rather long, baffling and expensive series of engine blow ups.
