Years ago we had manual dipswitches and people were taught to use them to prevent dazzling oncoming drivers.
In the late 1950s, my Dad’s MG Magnette ZB had a floor mounted dip switch, to the left of the clutch.
As for the headlights being discussed; they are a real pain to oncoming traffic on the winding and undulating roads around here.
